New Mexico Baseball has been awarded the 2023-24 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, the organization announced Wednesday.
Teams from every level of college and high school baseball — over 800 in total — were honored with this year’s award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the cumulative 2023-24 academic year. The Lobo baseball program posted a 3.435 cumulative GPA over the 2023-2024 academic year to qualify.
With this year’s honor, all three UNM teams Brown has coached (2022, 2023, 2024) have earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for their academic accomplishments, with a UNM player earning CSC Academic All-American honors following each of the last two seasons. The Lobo Baseball team posted a 3.32 GPA last semester, tied for the fifth-best in program history. The top six semesters by GPA in program history were all under Coach Brown.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation’s oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA’s awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
