RENO, Nev. – Nevada outfielder JR Freethy was selected in the 14th round (No. 427 overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, Tuesday.
Freethy is Nevada’s ninth MLB Draft selection since 2019, and the fourth over the program’s first two seasons under head coach Jake McKinley. Kade Morris (third round, New York Mets) and Peyton Stumbo (20th round, Pittsburgh Pirates) heard their names called last year, and RHP Jason Doktorczyk was selected in Monday’s ninth round by the Minnesota Twins.
A switch hitter out of Rocklin, Calif., Freethy just completed his third season with the Wolf Pack in 2024. This past spring he was one of just two Nevada players to appear in all 51 games, making 50 starts. Freethy batted .303, led the team in runs scored (45) and on-base percentage (.414), and shared the team lead in triples (three) while tying for second on the team in home runs (10) and coming in second in slugging (.579). He also drove in 37 runs and had 18 doubles.
Over his three seasons (2022-24) with the Wolf Pack, Freethy batted .280 with 15 homers and 61 RBIs, along with being named Mountain West Player of the Week on one occasion (April 18, 2023).
