LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women’s golf junior Toa Yokoyama shot a second-round 5-under 67 to surge into the top 15 at the NCAA Las Vegas Regional Tuesday on the Lakes and Canyon Courses at Spanish Trail Country Club (Par 72, 6,665 yards). The regional competition is being hosted by UNLV and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Yokoyama made seven birdies on the day, including four straight from her eighth through 11th holes, to spur her 31-spot leap up the leaderboard into a tie for 13th at 1-under through 36 holes. She pulled within three shots of Oklahoma’s Savannah Barber (-4) who leads all players in contention for the NCAA Championship automatic individual berth.
Maintaining its spot atop the team standings, Arkansas posted an 8-under for the second straight day to lower its score to 16-under. Vying for position as one of the top-5 advancing teams are Purdue (-12) in second and four shots off the lead, UCLA (-2) in third, Florida State (-1) in fourth and Baylor (+2) in fifth.
Atop the individual standings, Florida State’s Lottie Woad’s second consecutive 5-under 67 round dropped her score to 10-under for the tournament. Woad took a one-shot lead over day-one leader Kajak Mistry (-9) from Arkansas in second.
The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship being held at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa from May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.
