LAS VEGAS – The second-seeded and No. 62-ranked San Diego State women’s tennis is in Las Vegas this week for the Mountain West Championships. After earning a bye in the First Round, the Aztecs opened play with a Quarterfinals matchup against tenth-seeded Utah State on Thursday morning at Darling Tennis Center. SDSU won the doubles point and all three singles matches to finish in a 4-0 shutout victory. The Aztecs advance to Friday morning’s Semifinals.
The Scarlet and Black improve to 14-6 and end the Aggie season at 5-17.
In doubles, the All-Mountain West tandem of Andreea Velcea and Andjela Skrobonja (12-3) paired up on the second court. Facing Lisa Kung and Ana Chavez Sanchez, the Aztecs earned a 6-3 win. On court No. 1, Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey (8-7), another all-conference team, played against Zeynep Ozturk and Laureno Eugenio De Hilario. The Aztecs were bested 6-4. Gloria Alogo played on the third court with Zoe Olmos (4-9). Facing Niyati Kukreti and Magdalena Nunez Pureco, the Aztec pair earned a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point.
An All-Mountain West singles selection, no. 98-ranked Skrobonja (16-2) matched up with Kung on the second court. Skrobonja earned a 6-3 win in the first set and shut out her opponent in the second 6-0 to extend the Aztec lead to 2-0.
The Mountain West Player of the Year, No. 97-ranked Kabbaj (13-2) battled Ozturk on the top court. The Aztec won 6-4 in the first set and also faced less resistance in the second as she won 6-2.
Alogo (7-4) faced off against Nunez Pureco on court no. 4. The first set went to a tiebreaker, but Alogo emerged victorious 7-6 (7-4). She, too, had an easier going in the second set, winning 6-2 to send the Aztecs to the Semifinals
Three matches went unfinished. On the third court, Petchey (8-6) faced Kukreti. Petchey earned a 6-3 win in the first set but dropped the second by the same score. She won the first two games of the deciding third set before Alogo clinched the match. Velcea (12-4) faced Indya Nespor on court no. 5. Velcea won the first set 6-3 but trailed 6-5 in the second when the match was clinched. Olmos (8-8) went up against Chavez Sanchez on the bottom court. She was tripped up 6-4 in the first set but led 5-4 in the second when the Aztecs won.
San Diego State moves on to Friday’s Semifinal round. The Aztecs will play at 11 a.m. against the winner of third-seeded Wyoming and sixth-seeded Colorado State. This season, SDSU beat the Cowgirls 4-0 and the Rams 4-1. San Diego State is 8-4 all-time in the Semifinals.
