HOUSTON, Texas – With day two of the 2024 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships in the books, San Diego State leads the meet with a team score of 568 points. UNLV’s Ruby Howell had a record-breaking day in the 200-yard IM.
Howell broke the Championship and all-time Mountain West records while taking home gold, clocking in at 1:56.67. The previous Championship record of 1:57.18 was set by Boise State’s Samantha J. Wicks in 2016, while the all-time MW record was set by San Diego State’s Mikaela Macklin in 2014 with a time of 1:56.95. Howell’s time is good for an NCAA B Standard.
Filling out the top three was San Diego State’s Mai McKenna (1:59.97) and Moa Bergdahl (2:00.17), respectively.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Colorado State’s Erin Dawson placed first with an NCAA B Standard time of 4:43.76, more than a second ahead of second-place Frederica Kizek from Nevada, who finished in 4:44.85, also an NCAA B Standard. Filling out the top three was UNLV’s Gina Miller (4:47.52) in third place.
In first and logging a B standard final time of 22.24 in the 50-yard freestyle was San Diego State’s Meredith Smithbaker. Coming in second in 22.39 was UNLV’s Fernanda Mendez Guerra, who also logged a B standard time. Colorado State’s Lexie Trietley finished with bronze in a time of 22.73.
In the three-meter dive, San Diego State’s Valentina Lopez Arevalo placed first with a score of 374.2, Nevada’s Melissa Mirafuentes dove into second with a 363.75, and in third place was San José State’s Jenna Jagielski with a 349.6. The trio all posted NCAA Zone A marks.
San Diego State won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:33.65, while Nevada logged a second-place time of 3:36.14 and UNLV finished third with a time of 3:38.41.

Day-three events are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. CT Friday, Feb. 23, with the 100-yard butterfly preliminary round followed by the 400-yard IM, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke prelims. Finals begin at approximately 6 p.m. CT in the previously listed order.
