HOUSTON, Texas –The 2024 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships begin Wednesday, as nine teams compete for the Conference crown. The four-day event opens Wednesday, Feb. 21, and wraps up Saturday, Feb. 24.

For the second consecutive year the championships will take place at the CRCWC Natatorium located on the University of Houston’s campus.

STORYLINES

  • Air Force’s Kinzie Etzelmiller broke the school record in the 3-meter this season at the Liberty invite, posting a score of 313.65 in the event.
  • Colorado State’s Erin Dawson and Maya White both logged NCAA “B” standard times in the 400-yard individual medley (4:15.35) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:30.35), respectively, both times lead the Conference.
  • The Wolf Pack brought in 11 freshmen and seven returners, including Lucia Gabino, the 2023 Mountain West Diver of the Year.
  • New Mexico welcomed first year head coach, Naya Higashijima prior to the 2023-24 season. Higashijima came to the Lobos from SMU, where she spent four years as the program’s associate head coach. She is the sixth swimming & diving head coach for the Lobos.
  • San Diego State, the 2022 and 2023 Conference Meet Champions, return to Houston looking to garner a record a three-peat, and its fourth championship in the last five years and to log their eighth Conference title.
  • The Aztecs own a 15-0 meet dual on the season and have won 65 consecutive dual meets dating back to Jan. 8, 2018.
  • San Diego State’s Christiana Williams earned the MW Swimmer of the Week nod for the first time in her career after logging a pair of Aztec Aquaplex pool records in the 100 (59.91) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.74) against San Diego in late January. Her 100-breast time marks the fourth swimmer in SDSU history to eclipse the 1-minute barrier in the event. Both of her 100 and 200-breast times surpassed NCAA “B” cut times.
  • UNLV finished the season with a 5-3 record in dual meets, including wins over BYU, in-state rival Nevada, Wyoming, UC Santa Barbara and Grand Canyon.
  • Rebel sophomore Erika Carlson swam a program-best, 4:46.53, in the 500-yard freestyle, also marking an NCAA “B” cut time.
  • Leading the Rebels with multiple Mountain West-leading times this season is senior Blanka Bokros in the 100 fly (53.07) and 200 fly (1:57.09). Adding their own mark atop the MW time charts on the year are senior Ruby Howell in the 200 IM (1:59.72), sophomore Erika Carlson in the 500 free (4:46.53) and freshman Fernanda Mendez Guerra (49.18).
  • Wyoming logged an early 5-0 record, the programs best start since the 2016-17 season. Finished 8-2 overall with a 3-1 mark among Mountain West competition.
  • Maisyn Klimczak looks to become a back-to-back champion in the 1650-yard freestyle, the feat would be the first two-time champion for the Cowgirls since Katelyn Blattner.
