COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel has been named the Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week, while Utah State sophomore Logan Hammer was tabbed the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.

San Diego State sophomore Shaquena Foote has been selected as the MW Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Colorado State junior Mya Lesnar was named the MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week and Wyoming’s Salma Elbadra was selected as the MW Women’s Freshman of the Week.

MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE/FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK 
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Keren, Eritrea/Al Selef Al Salih

  • Won the 3,000-meter run at the Boston David Hemery Valentine Invitational, clocking a time of 7:40.63.
  • Broke the all-time Mountain West record and ranks 12th all-time in the NCAA.
  • Time is first in the MW and 11th in the nation this season.

 

MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 
LOGAN HAMMER, UTAH STATE
Sophomore, Nampa, Idaho/Columbia HS

  • Won the pole vault at the Tyson Invitational with a clearance of 5.42 meters.
  • Clearance is the third-best mark in Utah State history.
  • Ranks first in the MW and 21st in the nation this season.

 

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
SHAQUENA FOOTE, SAN DIEGO STATE
Sophomore, Westmoreland, Jamaica/Petersfield HS

  • Placed second in the 400-meter run (52.60) and fourth in the 4x400m relay (3:39.32) at the Don Kirby Invitational.
  • Broke her own school record in the 400m for the second week in a row.
  • Ranks first in the MW and 26th in the NCAA in 2024.

 

WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
MYA LESNAR, COLORADO STATE
Junior, Alexandria, Minnesota/Arizona State

  • Won the shot put (19.07 meters) and the weight throw (21.78 meters) at the Don Kirby Invitational.
  • Shot put mark broke the CSU record, the Mountain West record and is eighth-best all time in the NCAA. Also ranks first in the MW and NCAA this season.
  • Threw a career-best mark in the weight throw, moving up to third all-time in CSU history.

 

WOMEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
SALMA ELBADRA, WYOMING
Inezgane, Morocco/Universal School

  • Placed sixth in the Mile at the Husky Classic, crossing the finish line in 4:35.02.
  • The fastest freshman time at the meet.
  • Time leads the MW and ranks 35th in the nation in 2024.
