Colorado Springs, Colo. – New Mexico newcomer Habtom Samuel has been named the Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week, while Wyoming senior Kareem Mersal was tabbed the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.

San Diego State junior Shaquena Foote has been selected as the MW Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Wyoming senior Sadie McMullen was named the MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week and San Diego State newcomer Aji Mbye has been tabbed the MW Women’s Freshman of the Week.

MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE/FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK 
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Keren, Eritrea/Al Selef Al Salih

  • Placed second (first among collegiate runners) in the mile run at the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational with a program-record time of 3:53.91.
  • Time is second fastest in the NCAA this season and fastest ever in the Albuquerque Convention Center.

MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 
KAREEM MERSAL, WYOMING
Senior, Cairo, Egypt/Victory College

  • Won the long jump at the Ralph Lindeman Classic with a MW-record and program-record mark of 8.02 meters.
  • Jump ranks second in the nation in 2023-24.

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
SHAQUENA FOOTE, SAN DIEGO STATE
Junior, Westmoreland, Jamaica/Petersfield HS

  • Won the 200-meter dash at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational with a personal-best time of 23.54, which is third-fastest in program history.
  • Placed second (first among collegiate runners) in the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 53.41.
  • Both times rank first in the Mountain West and among the top 20 in the nation this year.

WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
SADIE MCMULLEN, WYOMING
Senior, Morrison, Colorado/Valor Christian HS

  • Won the long jump at the Ralph Lindeman Classic with a personal-best mark of 6.18 meters.
  • Jump ranks first in the Mountain West and 23rd in the NCAA this season.

WOMEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
AJI MBYE, SAN DIEGO STATE
The Gambia, West Africa/Broadfording Christian Academy

  • Placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.52) and 200-meter dash (24.36) at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational.
  • Both times are the best by a freshman in the Mountain West in 2023-24.
