FORT COLLINS – One of the nation’s best points guards, McKenna Hofschild returns to the Nancy Lieberman Award Top 10 list the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Monday. Hofschild was named to the Top 10 and a finalist a season ago.
Now in its 25th year, the award recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates must exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Midway through the season, the All-American guard continues to lead the nation in assists per game, averaging 8.8 and is No. 2 in total assists and assist/turnover ratio. Not only does she lead the Colorado State offense that is scoring 73.2 points per game but adds to the mark scoring 24.4 points per game, which is No. 3 in the country. She is also shooting over 50 percent from the floor and has a 46.3 clip from behind the arc – No. 7 in the nation.
In Hofschild’s career, she is currently No. 3 among active career leaders for assists with 723. This past weekend, she became the Mountain West’s all-time assist leader and moved into the league’s top five in scoring. Hofschild also moved to No. 2 in all-time scoring in Colorado State history. She became the all-time assist leader earlier this season.
Fans can support Hofschild in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, February 2 on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process. In March, five finalists will be presented to Lieberman and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Nancy Lieberman Award is composed of top women’s college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
