COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV senior Desi-Rae Young has been tabbed the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Fresno State’s Taija Sta. Maria has been named the MW Freshman of the Week.

DESI-RAE YOUNG, UNLV

Senior, Center, Las Vegas, Nevada/Desert Oasis HS

  • Led the Lady Rebels to a 2-0 mark to start the season with wins over Loyola Marymount (72-62) and College of Charleston (85-60).
  • Posted her 36th and 37th career double-doubles with 22 points and 16 rebounds at LMU and 18 points and 10 rebounds against College of Charleston.
  • Shot 50 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

TAIJA STA. MARIA, FRESNO STATE

Guard, Vaughn, Ontario, Canada/Crestwood Preparatory College

  • Helped the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record to start the season with victories over Fresno Pacific (70-42) and UC Merced (100-47).
  • The guard posted double-digit scoring efforts in both games with 12 points and 25 points, respectively. Averaged 18.5 points per game, while shooting 53.8 percentage for the floor.
  • Logged six assists, six rebounds and five steals in nearly 59 minutes of play.
