Guerbert leads Pack through SDSU Fall Classic II

SAN DIEGO – Nevada wrapped up the fall season in San Diego at the SDSU Fall Classic II, and three members of the Wolf Pack made championship appearances.

Senior Lou-Anne Guerbert won all three of her matches, earning her the black draw championship. Guerbert’s path to the finals began with a quarterfinal matchup against Oregon’s Jo-Yee Chan, whom she defeated 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7). In the semifinal, Guerbert beat Elys Ventura of Colorado 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. To clinch the championship, Guerbert won a three-set thriller 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 against host San Diego State’s Rania Azziz.

Two other members of the Wolf Pack appeared in their respective finals, including Tunisian sophomore Wiem Boubaker and Russian senior Anastasia Luneva. Boubaker made her second consecutive final, backing up her runner-up performance at the ITA Mountain Regional last month. Boubaker opened the tournament with a straight-sets victory over UC San Diego’s Ella Pachl, 6-2, 6-4. She followed the win with a semifinal defeat of Colorado’s Pia Rebec, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. Boubaker’s run came to an end in a heartbreaking three-set loss, just as it did at the ITA Mountain Regional. Boise State’s Nicole Discenza defeated Boubaker 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, winning the silver draw. Luneva took a similar path to the gold draw championship. In the quarterfinal, Luneva defeated Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya (Colorado State), 6-2, 6-1. The Moscow native then edged out Boise State’s Shauna Heffernan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch her spot in the championship match. Luneva was defeated by Zara Lennon (Colorado State), 7-5, 6-2 in the final.

Sophomore Amahée Charrier took down Andjela Skrobonja of San Diego State in her red draw quarterfinal match, 7-6, ret. Charrier, however, dropped her semifinal match 6-3, 7-5 to Oregon’s Sophie Luescher. Senior Mathilde Sarcelet made her first appearance of the season, winning her opening match 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Boise State’s Ana Conde. Sarcelet also fell in her semifinal match, losing 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-5 to UC San Diego’s Polina Jorniak.

On Sunday, sophomore Marlene Foerster and freshman Kennedy Robinson won their fall finales. Foerster defeated Colorado’s Ellen Puzak 6-4, 6-1. Robinson won her consolation match 6-1, 6-4 against UC San Diego’s Sophie Pearson.

The Wolf Pack had a successful doubles showing, winning three of their opening matches. New pairings Guerbert/Robinson and Foerster/Charrier won their inaugural matches. The senior-freshman grouping of Guerbert/Robinson defeated Colorado’s Elys Ventura and Betina Tokac, 6-2. After losing in their semifinal match, 6-1, to UC San Diego’s Kelly Leung/Jorniak, Guerbert and Robinson won their Sunday consolation match, 6-3, over UC San Diego’s Pachl/Katelyn Vu. Foerster/Charrier were victorious over Colorado State’s Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Logan Voeks, 6-3. Returning duo Luneva/Boubaker won their first two matches en route to another finals appearance, first defeating UC San Diego’s Grace Gamal and Naomi Nguyen 6-2. Luneva and Boubaker followed up their quarterfinal victory with a win over Sarka Richterova and Avelar 6-2. Luneva and Boubaker dropped their championship match to Colorado State’s Radka Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko 7-5. This finals appearance is the second of the fall season for the duo. Luneva and Boubaker won the Grey Draw at the Cal Fall Invitational in early October.

The Pack will be back in action in January, with three duals in Long Beach, Calif. against Iowa, Long Beach State, and CSUN. Nevada will host its first home dual March 15, opening Mountain West play against Wyoming.
