Two come in singles, one in doubles

SAN DIEGO – If you’re going to close out the fall campaign, do it in style.

Colorado State’s women’s tennis team won three bracket titles on Sunday, the final day of the San Diego State Fall Classic II, two of them coming in singles.

Each competitor played one match of singles and doubles each of the three days, and it being the fall, there were a few changes to the brackets throughout to avoid teammates playing each other. Overall, the Rams went 14-7 in singles play, with each player winning at least one match (Radka Buzkova sat out singles). In doubles, they won eight of 12 matches, again, each team winning at least one match.

“I don’t think we could end or wrap up the fall any better. We’ve all been challenged and tested this fall, lots of ups and downs for individuals with injuries or hurdles,” CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. “Our team embraced this final opportunity and believed in themselves in big moments.”

Zara Lennon won all three of her matches in Gold singles, beating Anastasia Luneva of Nevada 7-5, 6-2 in the championship match. She won all three of her matches in straight sets, as did freshman Logan Voeks in taking the Bronze singles title. She capped her run with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Polina Jorniak of San Diego.

In doubles, Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko continued their strong fall performance with a trio of victories, the last staking claim to the White bracket.  They beat Nevada’s Luneva and Wiem Boubaker 7-5. They went 11-3 in the fall. Buzkova now owns 53 career doubles wins, tying her for seventh in program history with Alana Colglazer.

“I’m so proud  of the way the team approached this tournament and how they finished,” Tran said. “They all competed so well and had  unwavering belief in themselves. We are excited for what’s to come this spring.”

The team will continue to practice through the holiday break, then return with the first spring dual close at hand, hosting North Dakota on Jan. 20.
