LAS VEGAS – UNLV redshirt rookie quarterback Jayden Maiava (Las Vegas/Liberty HS) has been named College Football Network Freshman Player of the Week, the outlet announced Sunday.
Maiava (my-AH-vah) set a school single-game record for pass completion percentage by a freshman with an 80-percent clip while helping the Rebels defeat in-state rival UNR 45-27 on Saturday in Reno.
Maiva led his team to its first four-game winning streak in a decade by completing 20-of-25 pass attempts for 257 yards and two touchdowns with zero turnovers. He twice connected with wide receiver Ricky White for touchdowns – one from 59 yards on the opening drive to give UNLV a 7-0 lead and the other from 82 yards to make the score 28-7 in favor of the visitors. The 82-yard strike tied for the fourth-longest pass play in UNLV history and longest since 2017. Maiava also added 32 net rushing yards in the offensive outburst, which included a school-record fourth consecutive outing scoring at least 40 points.
In addition, White earned honorable mention for CFN Offensive Player of the Week after the junior hauled in eight passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns vs. the Wolf Pack.
UNLV will next host Colorado State for Homecoming on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT. Tickets are on sale now by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.
