FRESNO, Calif. – The Mountain West announced today its 2023 Baseball All-Conference awards and individual honors as selected solely by the MW head coaches. Air Force first baseman Sam Kulasingam was chosen as the Tony Gwynn Player of the Year, while San Diego State junior TJ Fondtain was named MW Pitcher of the Year, and Fresno State’s Murf Gray was tabbed the MW Freshman of the Year. San Diego State head coach Mark Martinez and San José State skipper Brad Sanfilippo were named the MW Co-Coach of the Year.

Kulasingam is the Tony Gwynn Player of the Year for the second year in a row, becoming just the fourth player in Mountain West history to earn the award in consecutive seasons. The junior led the league in batting average (.418), hits (51), runs scored (38), and on-base percentage (.542) during league play. He was also second in the MW in doubles, with 15 in 2023.

Fondtain is the seventh Aztec to win the MW Pitcher of the Year award and the second in a row from SDSU. The junior recorded a 7-1 mark on the mound in Conference action with a league-best 2.27 ERA in 10 starts. He allowed 17 earned runs and 16 walks in 67.1 innings pitched. Fondtain was second in the league in strikeouts with 73 in MW play.

Gray, the third Bulldog in program history to earn MW Freshman of the Year honors, posted a .263 batting average in 27 MW games. The Madera, California, native recorded 25 hits, including seven extra-base knocks, 16 RBIs, and 12 runs scored.

Martinez, named MW Co-Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, becomes the second Aztec skipper to garner the accolade. In his ninth year at the helm, Martinez led the Aztecs to a share of the Mountain West regular-season title, the third in program history and first since 2004, after finishing league play with an 18-11 record.

For the first time in program history and in his career, Sanfilippo was tabbed the MW Co-Coach of the Year. In his sixth year as SJSU’s head coach, Sanfilippo led the Spartans to a share of the 2023 MW regular-season crown, the first in program history, with an 18-11 mark.
