TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 3 Seed San Diego State claimed the 2022 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Tournament title with a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Seed UNLV today at the El Conquistador Resort. It is the first Conference crown for the Aztecs since 2003.
The Aztecs rallied to win four straight singles contests despite dropping the doubles point. Senior Bunyawi Thamchaiwat evened the match at 1-1, with a No. 1 singles win, downing UNLV senior Molly Helgesson in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).
SDSU took a 2-1 lead after senior Alicia Melosch clinched a win on No. 5 singles, defeating Rebel sophomore Salsa Aher (6-1, 6-4). The Aztecs built the lead to 3-1 when senior Tamara Arnold beat UNLV sophomore Zita Kovacs in No. 2 singles (6-1, 7-5).
Senior Nnena Nadozie recorded the match-clinching point for San Diego State. The Los Angeles, California native defeated Rebel senior Izumi Asano in straight sets at No. 3 singles to help the Aztecs win the championship.
San Diego State will be the MW’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Division 1 Women’s Tennis Championship Selection Show is set for Monday, May 2, at 4:30 p.m. MT/3:30 p.m. PT. The show will air on NCAA.com.
