SAN JOSE, California – A late goal in the second half by junior forward Jill Olguin edged No. 3 New Mexico to a 3-2 victory over No. 6 seed Colorado College on Tuesday evening in the first round of the 2018 Mountain West Women’s Soccer Championship at Spartan Soccer Field in San Jose, California. With the win, the Lobos advance to Thursday’s semifinal round where they will meet No. 2 seed Wyoming at 4 p.m. PT.
Although the Lobos walked away with the win, the Tigers outshot New Mexico 18-11, with nine of those shots coming in the first 45 minutes of play. As the score went back and forth, both teams applied pressure from either side of the field.
Only 33 seconds into the match, Jaelyn Hendren, who got the ball from teammate Amelia Bierle, drilled a shot from the outside edge of the box to put the Lobos in front 1-0. This was Hendren’s first goal of the season.
Colorado College responded taking seven shots, including two on goal, before earning a free kick after a Lobos foul. Lauren Milliet found the back of the net bringing the score to 1-1.
In the 29th minute, Leilani Baker found space between the Tigers defenders, playing a ball to Jennifer Munoz, who used her tactical footwork to help put the ball deep in the net to push the Lobos back on top (2-1).
With just seconds left to spare in the first half, Tigers freshman forward Kiley Suter received the ball off a corner kick and pounded the ball into the net to tie it up, 2-2.
Olguin recorded what was the game-winning goal in the 67th minute as she headed the ball right past the Tigers goalkeeper off a throw in by Jessica Nelson to propel the Lobos into the semifinal round.
The Lobos and Wyoming have met five times in the Mountain West Championship, where the Lobos own a 4-1 advantage all-time against the Cowgirls. The two faced each other during the regular season in September, with the Cowgirls earning a 3-2 victory on the Lobos turf.
Thursday’s two semifinal matches will be televised on The Mountain West Network on Stadium and can also be viewed via Facebook Live.
