COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West Conference 2018 Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year are San Diego State senior Ashley Henderson and Colorado State senior Mostafa Hassan. The duo, after continued success during the 2017-18 season, won the respective award for the second consecutive year.

The Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes the outstanding male and female athletes in the sport of indoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches of each member institution.

Henderson’s accomplishments are well tallied as the USTFCCA four-time All-American in two events broke the SDSU school record in the 200 during a second-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championship. For the second consecutive year, Henderson finished in the top five of both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the NCAA’s and broke the facility record, set at Texas A&M in the 200. At the MW Championship, she recorded a first-place time of 22.94 in the 200, and 7.20 in the 60-meter dash, which led to her being named the Female Outstanding Performer of the Meet for the second consecutive year. Henderson claimed her third straight Mountain West title in the 200-meter and second straight in the 60 meters at the 2018 MW Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Hassan, for the second consecutive season, won the NCAA Championship title in the shot put in College Station, Texas. The native of Cairo, Egypt, notched his fifth career All-American honor this season. At the 2018 Mountain West Championship hosted by New Mexico, Hassan received his third straight Conference title in shot put, as he fell just short of the record which he set a year ago. Hassan, who was on the Bowerman Award Watch List in 2017, which is awarded to the best male and female colligate athletes in track and field, was also named the Conference’s Outstanding Male Performer of the Meet during the 2018 Conference Championship.
