COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nevada will represent the Mountain West in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship with Sunday’s bracket announcement, earning a No. 12 seed. MW tournament champion Nevada received the league’s automatic bid.
This is just the third time in Conference history that only one MW team has been invited to the NCAA tournament. In 2001, BYU was a No. 12 seed and lost in the first round to Cincinnati (84-59) and last season with Fresno State, which lost in its first-round game to Utah.

No. 12 seed Nevada (28-6) received its first NCAA selection since 2007 and seventh all-time. The Wolf Pack earned the automatic bid after defeating Colorado State in the 2017 Mountain West Men’s Basketball Championship game last Saturday (79-71). Nevada will take on No. 5 seed Iowa State (23-10) in the Midwest Region. The Cyclones earned the Big 12’s automatic berth after defeating West Virginia.
Nevada is 4-6 all-time in NCAA tournament games. On three occasions the Wolf Pack have advanced beyond the first round (2007, 2005 and 2004).
Looking at Nevada…
- Nevada compiled a 1-2 record this season against teams that earned a spot in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The Wolf Pack split against Iona, winning on Nov. 20, 91-76, before losing to the Gaels six days later in the Great Alaska Shootout (75-73). Nevada also lost to St. Mary’s on the road in its regular-season opener.
- Thursday will be the first meeting between the Cyclones and the Wolf Pack.
- If Nevada advances, the Wolf Pack will face the winner of No. 4 Purdue (25-7) and No. 13 Vermont (29-5). The Wolf Pack are 0-1 vs. Purdue and 4-0 against Vermont.
