LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Nevada (25-6, 14-4) won the 2016-17 Mountain West regular-season title and enters the 2017 MW Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed. This is the Wolf Pack’s first championship as members of the MW and first since the 2011-12 season.
Colorado State will be the 2-seed after a 13-5 Mountain West season. Boise State finished third in the standings for the second consecutive season. Fresno State claims the No. 4 seed, while New Mexico will be No. 5. San Diego State bounced back from a 0-3 start to league play to finish sixth. 
Wyoming earns the No. 7 seed, while Utah State and San José State finish the season tied with a 7-11 Conference record in the No. 8 position. The Aggies won the head-to-head tiebreaker with their 81-75 victory over the Spartans on Feb. 22. 
Air Force (10) and UNLV (11) round out the bracket. The Falcons won the tiebreaker due to a 0-1 regular-season record vs. Colorado State.
The 2017 MW Men’s Basketball Championship will be held in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, March 8-11. Action gets underway Wednesday, March 8, with three first-round matchups airing on the Mountain West Network and Twitter. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds take place on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, respectively, and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The championship contest will be broadcast on CBS at 3 p.m. PT on Saturday, March 11. 
Mountain West Men’s Basketball Championship Notes
  • This is the second time Colorado State has earned the No. 2 seed in the MW tournament (2013). 
  • San José State’s No. 9 seed is its highest rank heading into the league tournament since joining the MW. 
  • New Mexico and San Diego State have won the most Mountain West tournament titles with four apiece. The Lobos titles came in 2005, 2012, 2013 and 2014, while the Aztecs were victorious in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2011.
  • Overall, the MW tournament has produced eight different champions in 17 years, with the current MW membership accounting for 14 of the 17 titles. New Mexico (4), San Diego State (4) and UNLV are the only current MW teams to have won multiple titles while Colorado State, Fresno State and Wyoming have each captured one crown.
  • A Mountain West regular-season champion or co/tri-champion has advanced to the finals of the tournament 13 times in 17 years, winning the crown seven times. New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV are the only three current MW members to earn a MW regular-season title and tournament crown in the same year. Additionally, the Lobos (2013) and Aztecs (2006) are the only teams to capture the tournament title after winning the regular-season crown outright.
  • The top two seeds have met eight times in the MW tournament finals, with the No. 2 seed winning all eight meetings.
  • The No. 1 seed has only won three Mountain West Championships, and are 3-7 in title games. The last time the top seed won the tournament was the 2013 New Mexico squad. 
  • The second seed has won nine of 17 MW Championships (.529).
