BERKELEY, Calif. – Jake McCoy and Rocco Caballero each homered to lead the San José State baseball team (15-21, 5-7 MW) in a 10-7 victory over Cal (18-17, 4-11 ACC) Wednesday night from Stu Gordon Stadium.
The Spartans wasted little time applying pressure, breaking through in the third inning. After working a pair of walks to open the frame, SJSU capitalized on a Cal error before JC Osorio-Agard delivered a clutch two-run double down the right field line. Rohne Klein followed with an RBI groundout, giving the Spartans an early 3–0 cushion.
Cal answered in the fourth with a two-run homer. However, San José State responded in the fifth. McCoy hit a solo home run, and Caballero later added an RBI double to put the Spartans back up by three.
Cal cut the Spartan lead to just one in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back sac-flies. An inning later, McCoy struck again with an RBI double, part of a two-run sixth that pushed the Spartans firmly in control 7-4.
In the seventh, Caballero launched a solo homer to left, giving the Spartans their largest lead of the night at four. Cal launched a short rally in the seventh, plating two runs, but were prevented from getting any closer thanks to an inning ending double play when Neil Jansen in right field caught a fly ball and then threw it home to Dylan Jackson to catch the Cal runner.
The Spartans added two insurance runs in the ninth, taking advantage of the third Cal error of the game. Cal added a run off a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, but would not be able to mount a comeback as the Spartans took the win 10-7.
On the mound, Caden Duke (3-0) earned the win in relief. Luka Pintar got the start, allowing four runs on four hits across four innings pitched. EJ McGrew closed the door to secure the save, allowing one run while striking out three in the final two innings.
