Colorado Springs, Colo. – New Mexico junior Habtom Samuel has been named the Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Air Force senior Texas Tanner was tabbed the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week and Grand Canyon’s Ty Johnston was named the MW Men’s Freshman of the Week.
Nevada’s Annalies Kalma has been selected as the MW Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, while Wolf Pack freshman Malena Galvan was named the MW Women’s Freshman of the Week. Fresno State’s Liz Tarczy picked up MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Junior, Keren, Eritrea/Al Selef Al Salih
- Won the “Elite” 5,000-meter race at Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener with a time of 13:05.21 – just .29 seconds behind his personal best of 13:04.92 set in February on the same track.
- The time stands as the fastest in the nation after the opening weekend of the season, while Samuel now owns the fifth- and sixth-fastest individual 5,000m performances in collegiate history indoors (per USTFCCCA standards).
- Remains undefeated in races during the 2025-26 academic year.
- Was named the USTFCCCA Men’s NCAA DI National Athlete of the Week for the third time in his career.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
TEXAS TANNER, AIR FORCE
Senior, Sheridan, Wyoming/Sheridan HS
- Broke school records in the weight throw and shot put at the Wyoming Power Meet.
- Won the shot put with a throw of 19.77m and finished second (top collegiate) in the weight throw with a mark of 24.28m – the fifth-longest mark in Mountain West history.
- Both marks currently lead the NCAA, with his weight throw distance leading the nation by nearly three meters.
MEN’S FRESHMAN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
TY JOHNSTON, GRAND CANYON
Chandler, Arizona/Hamilton HS
- Finished fourth in the 400-meter race at the Silver State Invitational.
- His time of 47.53 set the Grand Canyon freshman record and ranks second in the Mountain West.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
ANNALIES KALMA, NEVADA
Senior, Hamilton, New Zealand/St. Peters School Cambridge
- Took first in the 400-meter race and helped Nevada’s 4×400-meter relay team to a first-place finish.
- Broke the school record in the 400-meter with a time of 52.73, also setting meet and facility records.
- As the anchor for the 4×400-meter relay, helped the Wolf Pack to a time of 3:40.56 in the event, which ranks third in program history and sixth in the NCAA through week one.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
LIZ TARCZY, FRESNO STATE
Junior, San Diego, California/ Scripps Ranch HS
- Won the high jump at the Silver State Invitational with a career-best indoor mark of 1.82m/5-11.5.
- The reigning MW Indoor and Outdoor High Jump Champion hit the mark on her third attempt and dominated the field with the second-place finisher well behind at 1.72m/5-7.75.
- The mark ranks No. 1 in the nation after the opening weekend of the season.
WOMEN’S FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
MALENA GALVAN, NEVADA
Buenos Aires, Argentina/ San Vicente de Paul
- Making her collegiate debut, finished second in the 400-meter B Section at the Silver State Invitational.
- Her time of 56.31 was the top time among NCAA freshman over the weekend.
- Ran the opening leg of the 4×400-meter relay for the Wolf Pack with the time of 3:40.56 ranking No. 3 in program history and No. 6 in the country this season.
