COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced today the hire of JJ Burrell as a director of sports administration and championships operations.
He officially joins the MW staff today (Oct. 13) and will be the Conference’s sport administrator for women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s golf.
Burrell comes to the MW from Conference member UNLV, where he started in June 2022. The Las Vegas native started at UNLV as a coordinator of athletics events and operations before being elevated to director of athletics events and game operations in January 2024.
At UNLV, Burrell served as the primary event manager for baseball, women’s basketball and women’s volleyball and offered secondary assistance for football, men’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer operations. He also oversaw day-to-day facility and events operations to maintain all athletic facilities.
He assisted in the administration of several Mountain West championships at UNLV, including the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and serving as the game manager for the MW Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Prior to his stint at UNLV, Burrell was an athletics event and game operations intern at Utah Tech from 2020-22. There, he oversaw three athletics facilities, coordinated setup and breakdown for several sports before and after events, served as the primary DV Sports Replay official and provided support to officials and head coaches for each sport.
Burrell earned a degree in recreation and sports management from Utah Tech before adding a master’s in intercollegiate and professional sport management from UNLV.
