LOGAN, Utah — Utah State football senior Jalen Royals earned a pair of national player of the week awards, being named the Breakout Offensive Player of the Week by the East-West Shrine Bowl and the Offensive Player of the Week by the Senior Bowl.
Royals, a 6-foot, 195-pound wide receiver from Powder Springs, Georgia, (Hillgrove HS/Georgia Military College), set a career-high with 211 yards on nine catches in Utah State’s 62-30 loss at Boise State. Royals’ 211 yards are tied for the 11th-most in a single game in school history and the most by a USU player since former Aggie Deven Thompkins had 215 receiving yards against New Mexico State in 2021. Royals scored a pair of touchdowns during the game, scoring from 59 and 75 yards out, the longest play from scrimmage by the Aggies this season. Royals also returned four kicks for 72 yards, finishing with a career-high 283 all-purpose yards.
With the performance, Royals eclipsed 100 catches and 1,500 receiving yards for his career. He now ranks 23rd in Utah State history with 105 receptions and 18th with 1,571 receiving yards. At 19 touchdowns, Royals is also now tied for fifth all-time in school history.
The Senior Bowl features elite draft prospects from around the country who are selected to showcase their talent and connect with coaches and decision-makers from all 32 NFL teams. This year’s Senior Bowl begins with a week of practices, culminating in the Senior Bowl game on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.
The East-West Shrine Bowl is the longest-running college all-star football game in the nation. An important part of America’s football tradition, the event gives top college players a chance to showcase their talents to NFL scouts and a national television audience. This year’s Shrine Bowl will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 30, 2025.
