COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico senior Will Asby has been named the Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week, while Lobo teammates Brett Russell was selected the MW Baseball Pitcher of the Week and Gene Trujillo named the MW Baseball Freshman of the Week honor.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
WILL ASBY, NEW MEXICO
Senior, Outfield, Sacramento, California/San Francisco
- Led New Mexico to a 4-0 record last week, including a series sweep of San Diego State and a victory over Texas Tech.
- Batted .526 in four starts in the outfield with 10 hits, eight RBIs and five runs scored.
- Recorded two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs in the win at Texas Tech.
- Posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and registered multi-hit games in three of four outings.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
BRETT RUSSELL, NEW MEXICO
Senior, Enid, Oklahoma/Seminole State College
- Earned the win on Saturday against San Diego State, clinching a series victory for the Lobos.
- Threw a career-high seven shutout innings, limiting the Aztecs to three hits and one walk.
- Struck out seven batters.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
GENE TRUJILLO, NEW MEXICO
Designated Hitter, Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X HS
- Batted .500 in four plate appearances with two hits, three RBIs and one run scored.
- Drew two walks, while posting an on-base percentage of .667.
- Registered a 1.500 slugging percentage.
