SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – Four Lady Rebels were in double-figures as the no. 25/23 UNLV women’s basketball team held onto a 67-60 win over San Diego State at Viejas Arena on Wednesday morning. The Lady Rebels secured their 29th straight victory over Mountain West foes.

Nneka Obiazor was red hot off the bench as she led the Lady Rebels (15-1, 5-0 MW) with a season-high 18 points by shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 from long range. Obiazor’s four made three-pointers is a season-high and was one shy away from tying her career-high of five. Desi-Rae Young recorded her 41st career double-double and sixth of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds (two offensive, nine defensive). Jasmyn Lott put up 11 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while Amarachi Kimpson added 10 points, respectively.

San Diego State (11-8, 2-4 MW) was led by Adryana Quezada who scored 18 points and Kim Villalobos’ double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds (three offensive, 10 defensive).

GAME OF RUNS: Kiara Jackson scored the first bucket of the game, but San Diego State answered with back-to-back baskets to take a 4-2 lead. UNLV then scored seven straight points to make it 9-4 in favor of the Lady Rebels. With less than three minutes to play in the first quarter, San Diego State tied the game 10-all. UNLV then scored a layup and hit a three-pointer to make it 15-10 after the first 10 minutes. To start the second quarter, the Aztecs had seven consecutive points to take the lead back 17-15. UNLV and San Diego State went back-and-forth for the rest of the second quarter and the Aztecs held a 23-20 lead heading into the break. The Lady Rebels came out of the break firing and made back-to-back baskets to go up one over the Aztecs, 24-23. San Diego State took the lead back right after, but five straight points by Young gave UNLV a 29-25 lead. From there, the Lady Rebels heated up some more and had another six straight points to extend the lead to double-digits, 43-32, but San Diego State scored five points to cut the deficit to six heading into the final frame, 43-37. Lott started the fourth quarter with a beautiful three-point play after being fouled under the hoop. The Aztecs then answered with seven straight points to get within two, 46-44. Six consecutive points for UNLV put them back up by eighth, 54-46, with five minutes left to play. Another seven-point scoring run for the Lady Rebels extended their lead back to double-figures at 61-48. San Diego State and UNLV went back-and-forth for the rest of the game, including two made free throws by the Aztecs to cut the deficit to seven, 67-60.

OTHER NOTES:

  • UNLV’s bench was hot, scoring 39 of the 67 points.
  • The Lady Rebels and Aztecs were tied in rebounds (38 each).
  • There were six lead changes and four times UNLV and San Diego State were tied.
  • UNLV had 36 paint points compared to San Diego State’s 32.
  • This was the first game this season the Lady Rebels were down at halftime and rallied back to earn a victory.

UP NEXT: The Lady Rebels will be back in Las Vegas to host New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 20 with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
