Colorado Springs, Colo. – New Mexico newcomer Habtom Samuel has been named the Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week, while Utah State junior Godwin Charles was tabbed the MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.
Wyoming rookie Salma Elbadra has been selected as the MW Women’s Track Athlete and Freshman of the Week, while Fresno State junior Rachela Pace was named the MW Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE/FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
HABTOM SAMUEL, NEW MEXICO
Freshman, Keren, Eritrea/Al Selef Al Salih
- Placed fourth (second among collegiate runners) in the 3,000-meter run at the Washington Indoor Preview with a time of 7:45.61.
- Fastest time in the Mountain West and sixth in the NCAA this season.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
GODWIN CHARLES, UTAH STATE
Junior, Lagos, Nigeria/Central Arizona College
- Won the triple jump and placed second in the long jump at the Snake River Open.
- Recorded a triple jump mark of 15.74 meters, setting a program record. Mark is also the best in the MW and sixth in the nation this year.
- Long jump mark of 6.99 meters ranks 10th in the Conference.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE/FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
SALMA ELBADRA, WYOMING
Freshman, Inezgane, Morocco
- Won the mile at the Potts Invitational with a program-record time of 4:37.02.
- Time is the fastest in the Mountain West and seventh in the nation this season.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
RACHELA PACE, FRESNO STATE
Junior, Dingli, Malta/De La Salle College
- Won the triple jump and placed fourth in the long jump at Spokane Sports Showcase.
- Broke Fresno State’s triple jump record with a mark of 13.29 meters, which ranks fourth in the NCAA and first in the MW this season.
- Recorded the fourth-best long jump mark in the Conference after posting a jump of 5.87 meters.
