CHICAGO – Boise State linebacker DJ Schramm was named to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List, the Butkus Foundation announced Thursday.
The Butkus Award is given annually to the most impactful linebacker in the game. Schramm is one of 51 candidates for the award, and one of two from the Mountain West alongside Wyoming’s Easton Gibbs. He is one of nine linebackers included from a Group of Five school.
Schramm was named All-MW Second Team last season after leading the team in total tackles (111), solo tackles (53) and tackles-for-loss (12). He was one of three Broncos to start each of Boise State’s 14 games.
A four-time Academic All-MW recipient, Schramm was also named the MW Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11 tackles and forcing a fumble against San Diego State on Sept. 30.
The accolade adds to Schramm’s preseason honors, as he was also named a candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He has also previously been selected to the 2023 Preseason All-MW Team, the Athlon Preseason All-MW First Team and the Phil Steele All-MW Preseason First Team.
The award’s semifinalists will be named on Oct. 30 with finalists to follow on Nov. 20. The 2023 Butkus Award winner will be announced Dec. 6.
