Nicoson to be inducted into WGCA Hall of Fame

GCU head coach, 3-time D-II national champion gets honored Dec. 7 in Las Vegas

Grand Canyon women's golf head coach Brent Nicoson has earned one of the highest honors in collegiate golf, an induction into the Women's Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Brent Nicoson HeadshotNicoson, who has been at the helm of GCU's women's golf program since 2024, is a three-time NCAA Division II women's golf national champion coach with numerous accolades to his resume for him and his players.

At GCU, Nicoson's squads finished in the top three at eight tournaments since the fall of 2024 with three tournament team titles. This season, Nicoson's Lopes earned back-to-back top-three placements in the past two tournaments.

He has coached three all-conference players in two GCU seasons, including Calynne Rosholt and Anci Dy, the latter aiding him to his third national championship while at UIndy. Last season, Nicoson guided the emergence of Alexis Vakasiuola, a current sophomore who won Mountain West Freshman of the Year, broke the program's single-season scoring record and was the first Lope to compete in an NCAA regional tournament since 2022.

A UIndy alum and former Greyhounds golfer, Nicoson began his coaching career there in 2006-07 and led the men's side to an impressive 139-23-6 record in his first season. He began coaching the UIndy men's and women's teams in 2011-12 and claimed 10 Great Lakes Valley Conference championships while being named 2018 Golf Pride National Coach of the Year.

The 2014-15 season marked the first of three D-II women's golf national championships for Nicoson, whose UIndy squad was the first program outside Florida to win a D-II championship.

Nicoson later led 2018 and 2024 champions, with the most recent featuring Jess Haines, who is now a senior on the GCU squad.

For a career featuring 54 WGCA All-American Scholars, 63 all-conference players, eight individual conference champions and five NCAA individual regional champions, Nicoson will be honored in Las Vegas on Dec. 7.

Nicoson attended last year's WGCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony as a guest in support of former player Pilar Echeverria, the 2018 PING National Player of the Year. Now, he will be honored with a class that includes Amy Bond (Florida State), Kenny Trapp (Dallas Baptist) and Azahara Munoz (Arizona State).
