CRESWELL, Ore. – San Diego State scored multiple tournament records to extend its lead after two rounds of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship, which is being held at the par-72, 7,041-yard Emerald Valley Golf Club. Aztec senior Justin Hastings also torched the record book, jumping into the individual lead.
The 17th-ranked Aztecs, in pursuit of their fourth straight MW title, scorched the course for a 25-under-par 263 Saturday, turning in the best second round and second-best overall round in tournament history. SDSU’s 36-hole total of 532 crushed the previous MW tournament record of 544, which the Aztecs set in 2023. San Diego State is now 44-under for the tournament and holds a 22-stroke lead over second-place San José State.
Hastings can claim much of the credit for San Diego State’s assault on the record book, as he posted a monster day individually. Just a couple of weeks removed from turning in the lowest score by an amateur at The Masters, Hastings fired a 10-under 62 to move up one spot to the top of the leaderboard, breaking the course record (63), matching the MW tournament record and setting the second-round record. His two-day total of 129 also lowered the MW 36-hole record by a stroke, and he takes a four-stroke advantage over teammate Harry Takis into Sunday’s final round.
The Aztecs have all five players in the top eight and four in the top four. Things are going so well for SDSU that Tyler Kowack, the day-one leader who currently sits in third at 9-under 135, had the drop score Saturday with a 3-under 69. Takis is alone in second at 11-under 133 after Saturday’s 7-under 65, Nathan Sampson is tied for fourth at 8-under 136 after matching his day-one 4-under 68 and Chanachon Chokprajakchat is tied for eighth at 7-under 137 after a 4-under 68 in round two.
Second-place San José State has three players in the top 10, with Ivan Barahona tied for fourth at 8-under 136 after a 6-under 66 in round two. Zubair Firdaus and Avinash Iyer are tied for eighth at 7-under 137. Firdaus shot 2-under 70 and Iyer shot 5-under 67 on Saturday.
UNLV and Colorado State are tied for third at 18-under 558. The Rebels’ Caden Fioroni is tied for fourth at 8-under after a 5-under 67 on day two, while the Rams were the talk of the tournament for the first half of the day, shooting a 20-under 268 that stood as the MW tournament’s second-round record for all of a few hours before SDSU supplanted it. CSU made the most of moving day, jumping seven spots up the leaderboard, with all five players moving up the individual ranks, as well. Jake Rodgers made the biggest move, leaping 23 spots into 12th at 6-under 138 with a 7-under 65.
New Mexico is fifth at 13-under 563, followed by Nevada and Utah State in a tie for sixth, two strokes back. Fresno State follows in eighth at 9-under, with Joseph Lloyd tied for eighth individually, and Boise State is in ninth at 5-under, with defending champion Cole Rueck sitting in a tie for fourth at 8-under 136 after matching his day-one total of 4-under 68.
Wyoming (6-over) and Air Force (14-over) round out the field.
Championship day tee times begin at 8 a.m. PT, with Wyoming and Air Force paired together. Fresno State and Boise State follow at 8:40, Nevada and Utah State tee off at 9:20, Colorado State and New Mexico start at 10:00 and San Diego State, San José State and UNLV go off starting at 10:40.
