COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San José State senior Lucia Lopez Ortega has earned the inaugural Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week award of the spring season, while San Diego State rookie Kylie Phi has been selected as the MW Freshman of the Week.

The weekly honor is the sixth in Ortega’s career (four golfer, two freshman honors) and the first for Phi. Ortega also earned Freshman of the Month honors in September 2021.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
LUCIA LOPEZ ORTEGA, SAN JOSÉ STATE
Senior, Sa Coma, Mallorca, Spain/les Ortega y Gasset

  • Opened her spring season at the Match in the Desert, tying for 11th in a loaded field that included seven top-40 teams and five players ranked in the top 50 nationally.
  • Shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish ahead of four top-50 players and help the Spartans to a fifth-place team finish.
  • Tied for eighth at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, carding an even-par 213 over 54 holes and wrapping her tournament with a 2-under 69 for her first top-10 finish of the season.
  • Led the Spartans to a ninth-place finish in a stacked 16-team field that featured 14 teams and 16 players ranked in the top 50 nationally.
  • Finished ahead of 10 players ranked in the top 50.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
KYLIE PHI, SAN DIEGO STATE
Fountain Valley, California/Fountain Valley HS

  • Made her spring debut in the Aztecs’ dual match against Long Beach State.
  • Tied for third with a 2-over-par 74.
  • Had a team-best five birdies on the day.
