AROUND THE MOUNTAIN WEST
- The Mountain West is celebrating its 25th season of men’s basketball during the 2023-24 campaign.
- Heading into the second week of the 2023-24 campaign, Boise State and San Diego State are both receiving votes in the Associated Press Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll.
- Four Mountain West squads (Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada and Wyoming) are undefeated after the first week of the 2023-24 season.
- Colorado State’s Isaiah Stevens and Wyoming’s Cam Manyawu are among 21 players in the nation to open the season with back-to-back double-doubles.
- Among the 32 conferences, the Mountain West ranked fifth in NET rankings with an average NET of 88.4. The MW’s average was the best in the west in 2022-23.
- The MW and Big 12 were the only two conferences in 2022-23 in which every program had a NET ranking of 200 or better.
- The Mountain West was one of six conferences (Big 12, 7; SEC, 6; Big East, 4; Big Ten, 4; MW, 3; ACC, 3) with three or more teams ranked among the top 30 of the NET rankings in 2022-23.
- The Mountain West was one of five conferences that had five or more teams with at least 22 wins in 2022-2023.
- A total of six Mountain West squads appeared in the 2023 postseason. Four teams (Boise State, Nevada, San Diego State and Utah State) earned bids to the NCAA tournament. New Mexico received a bid to play in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), while San José State accepted an invitation to play in College Basketball Invitational (CBl).
- Four teams in the 2023 NCAA tournament marked the second time in league history with back-to-back seasons of four or more NCAA tournament bids. The MW had four in 2012 and five in 2013.
- The Mountain West was one of six conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, SEC) to have back-to-back seasons with four or more NCAA tournament bids in 2022 and 2023.
- The MW was one of seven conferences in 2023 (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) to have four or more teams earn NCAA tournament bids.
- 2023 marked the fifth-straight NCAA tournament that the MW has had multiple bids and the 20th time in Conference history that two or more teams earned bids.
- San Diego State made its first (and the Mountain West’s first) appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship game in 2023.
- SDSU was the only team west of the Mississippi River to make the 2023 Final Four.
- The Mountain West was 5-4 in the NCAA tournament in 2023, marking the most NCAA tournament wins in the postseason in league history.
- For the second year in a row and the eighth time since 2000, the Mountain West had six or more teams in the postseason.
