RENO, Nev. – Nevada RHP Peyton Stumbo was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round (No. 587 overall) on Tuesday’s final day of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Stumbo is the second Wolf Pack player to hear his name called at this year’s draft. Nevada teammate Kade Morris was selected by the New York Mets in Monday’s third round (No. 101 overall). Stumbo’s selection makes him the sixth Wolf Pack player drafted since 2019.The Auburn, Calif., native appeared in 33 games, with 19 starts, over his three-year Nevada career. Stumbo struck out 113 batters over 132.0 innings of work, with all but two of his mound appearances coming over the last two seasons.
In 2022, Stumbo went 5-2, making nine starts and striking out 55 batters over 69.1 innings. This past season, he started 10 of his 15 appearances, striking out 53 over 59.0 innings, while picking up a pair of big midweek wins at USC and Oregon State. He was part of a Wolf Pack pitching staff which set a program single-season record with 458 strikeouts in 2023.
