Mountain West Announces 2019-20 Preseason Men's Basketball All-Conference Team

LAS VEGAS – The Mountain West released its 2019-20 Preseason All-Conference Men’s Basketball team Tuesday morning in conjunction with the start of media day at Green Valley Ranch.
The preseason team, as selected by members of the media, is made up of three seniors, a junior and a sophomore. Of the seven preseason honorees, five earned all-conference accolades at the end of 2018-19.
Utah State’s Sam Merrill was selected Preseason Mountain West Player of the Year, while San Diego State’s Malachi Flynn was named Preseason MW Newcomer of the Year and Nevada’s K.J. Hymes garnered Preseason MW Freshman of the Year accolades.
Merrill, the 2018-19 MW Player of the Year and 2019 tournament MVP, garnered all-district honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches last season after leading the league in scoring with 731 points and helped the Aggies reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011.
Flynn, a 6-foot-1 transfer, joins the Aztecs after two seasons at Washington State. The redshirt junior averaged 15.8 points per game in 2017-18 and made a team-leading 77 3-pointers. The guard connected on 41.3 percent of his shots from the floor as a sophomore.
Hymes, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, used his redshirt season during 2018-19. The forward was a second-team all-4A conference selection his junior year at St. Mary’s High school. He averaged 12.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game as a senior at Hillcrest Prep.
Joining Merrill on the preseason all-conference team are Air Force’s Lavelle Scottie, Boise State’s Derrick Alston, Colorado State’s Nico Carvacho and Utah State’s Neemias Queta.
A two-time team captain, Scottie garnered All-Mountain West Third Team accolades in 2018-19. The senior forward led the Falcons in scoring the past two seasons and averaged 15.3 points per game as a junior. In MW play, Scottie averaged 18.0 points per game last year.
After a breakout season in 2018-19, Alston earned All-Mountain West Honorable Mention honors. The Houston, Texas, native was the Broncos’ No. 2 scorer and averaged 13.4 points per game. Alston became the second underclassmen in Boise State history to register two 30-point games in a single season.
A senior from Frisco, Texas, Carvacho was an U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-District and All-Mountain West First Team selection in 2018-19. He has recorded 35 double-doubles in his career, which
is a school record. With 950 rebounds in his career, Carvacho is nine boards away from claiming the all-time MW rebound record.
Queta, a sophomore from Barreiro, Portugal, was named the 2019 MW Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year after starting every game of his debut season. The center set a Utah State single-season record with 84 blocks, averaging a MW-leading 2.4 blocks per game. Queta averaged 11.8 points per game, while shooting 61.4 percent from the field.
